So many details and textures to take in on this gemmy purple fluorite.  This specimen is a rare find from the Berbes Mine in Spain which stopped production many years ago.  The distinctive well-formed fluorite crystals are mixed with delicate golden barite “blades”.  We love its complex composition with shades of violet to periwinkle clusters.  The fluorite crystals have defined internal geometric phantoms, displaying outlines of numerous smaller crystals.  Fluorite is also known as “the most colorful mineral in the world” due to the wide range of color variations.

Berbes is a mining area in the province of Ribadesella, Asturias, which is in the northern coast of Spain.  The Berbes Mine is famous for its violet and blue-purple fluorite cubic crystals, and associations with other minerals such as quartz and barite.  Specimens from this area of Spain are coveted by collectors and mineral enthusiasts.

Since the 1930s the area has been mined by competing entrepreneurs and companies.  Due to the physical condition of the mine and lack of financing over the decades, there are fewer and fewer quality specimens.  Due to its scarcity along with its distinctive composition and color, Purple Fluorite from the Berbes Mine is coveted by collectors and mineral enthusiasts alike.

Specimen Locality: Berbes, Berbes Mine, Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain.
